It really depends, French and Italian have a very strong "accent' in German and English, very hard to understand. But there are French and Italian who mastered it, so it's possible. The melody and the word stress they use is so off that it's really hard to follow during meetings. Especially if you are not able to pronounce Key sounds in the foreign language it will never be pleasant to converse with that person, which is really sad. So I would really motivate people to put more emphasis on pronunciation and intonation. It makes all the difference, even if you make grammar mistakes.

Im currently learning korean and japanese at the same time, and i have studied korean for two years and got to an intermediate level, so this year i started studying japanese because ive always loved it but here comes the tricky part. I have a full-time job and work 8 hours a day, so i can only dedicate 1 to 2 hours a day to language learning. What i did is i decided to focus on japanese and havent really stayed in touch with korean that much, other than korean music. Now my fear is, do you think I'll forget or lose my korean skills over time? I also fear that I'll end up mixing up those two languages, since they have some similarities.

Just found this channel while trying to learn a second language (polish), and I can't help but wonder like where abouts you live or have lived because your accent is like half English/half American. Like at 2:33 when you say "I love it" you sound English, then American again after a few sentences. PS I hope everything goes well with changing up your channel 😁😁😁

Learning a new language is one of the best journeys one can go. I personally prefer learning something new in my target language and then explaining the thing I learned to myself by recording my voice. The power of this is incredible. And it's very similar the concept you explained. Thanks for the video Robin!

I'm a Spanish speaking person who lived in Italy for a year. Within two weeks of learning Italian, I was able to get by. A year later, my Italian went like a native Italian person. I moved to Canada and it took me 6 months to be able to get by in English, 10 years later I still have a Spanish accent no matter how hard I try to get rid of it. The lesson learned is you can reach a native accent if your primary language is from the same family. So Italian, Portuguese and French I can easily master them, but in English, German and Nordic languages I can't reach the level of a native speaker.

  • @RozuLLC

Quiet as it's kept, this is probably one of the most fundamental lessons in language learning. I'm learning Spanish as a native English speaker. The biggest mistake I made was focusing only on speaking, or mistaking speaking a few words in the language with being fluent. This is because it sounds good, in a vacuum, to people who are not native Spanish speakers (or whatever your target language is). It sounds really good when you're by yourself, and you've never heard yourself speak those words before. You get this excitement and almost overconfidence to, as Robin put it, “aggressively” seek out any Spanish-speaking person to test what you think is good Spanish. And for the moments that YOU are speaking, and they show how impressed they are while YOU are speaking, you feel even more confidence. All of that falls apart when they speak at a normal native pace, and even worse when the person you're speaking to only speaks Spanish and no English, thereby taking any linguistic training wheels away. It is more important to listen and understand than to be understood. They are both critical, for you have to communicate sooner or later. But if you notice, in all languages, there is universal understanding. The one who speaks a lot, constantly interrupting the person talking to them to make their voice heard, are considered foolish and idiotic. The ones who speak the least, using carefully chosen words, but the words chosen are showing that they fully understood every nuance of what was said (and even what wasn't said), in all cultures they are considered amongst the wisest of all society. In my faith in Yeshua, biblically this is described as “Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath”. When you have conversations in any language, if you do not understand the person talking to you, and you focus only on getting your point across, whether meaning to or on accident, you give an air that you are more important than the person you are speaking to, and you show that you really don't have the fluency you thought you had. The underlying theme that he is describing is not simply learning as an introvert, but really is sharpening your understanding, listening alot, focusing on the highest frequency words that you know are common words phrases that are specific to both you and the environments you will find yourself in, and then, like a Sniper, listening to real world speakers and seeing if you understand them fully in passing like you would your native tongue. When you reach that point, you are truly becoming fluent, and conversations are truly conversations, not short presentations of the Spanish you think you understand.

*In summary* It's a 3-step process: 1. *To read the first chapter of a book all the way through* without really stopping or pausing for a dictionary in order to see how much could I understand just off of reading it all the way thought, (this approach is commonly named extensive reading -just read without a dictionary and try to guess the meaning of things and just hope that thought lots of exposure and lots of repetition of key vocabulary, you'll eventually sort of acquire lots of words-) 2. *To go back and do an intensive approach on that first chapter* , you'll ended up with a really solid understanding of the context (characters, what was going on, setting up the story, environments, etc.). Then, when you read the chapter two the magic will take place. _To take some notes (who's the main characters, what are their backstories that you know so far, where did they come from) that will help sort of a map you can refer back to all the way throughout the story_ 3. *Then move on and sort of every now again come back and maybe review those notes* (use a highlighter to highlight words that repeated) *Important Tip* : Whatever you, do intensive or extensive approach or some kind of combination, at least take the time to take an intensive study approach to the first chapter. *Thank you so much Robin*
